Studies on Interspecific Hybridization in Korean Lawngrasses (Zoysia spp .)

Abstract

|
|
Fourteen clones of genus Zoysia were collected from several habitats in the middle part of Korea. Crosses between them were made to examine their cross-compatibility. Among them, five typical species inhabiting Korea were selected to obtain more detailed data on the morphological aspect and growth rate. Interspecfic hybrids made by crossing were compared with the open-pollinated progenies.
Results obtained were summarized as follows:
1. The 14 clones were divided into 5 types according to their growth habit, and were crosscompatible each other.
2. The 5 species belonged to Type I, II, and V, but hybrids between them presented every types throughout Type I to V.
3. Hybrids were intermediate in morphological aspect, and presented hybrid vigor in growth rate.
